How To Keep Your Dog Cool In Summer

Hi there, I’m Bailey – Holly’s sidekick!
It’s terribly hot outside and isn’t too dog-friendly right now. So, I’m going to share my tips on how to keep your dog cool in the summer!
Two weeks ago it was cold and rainy and now the weather has done quite a spectacular 360 in only the way it would do in the UK! No kidding, Holly told me her car showed 36 degrees on her way home one day. So whilst the humans know how to look after themselves in this weather, they also need to turn their attention to their pets too!

Here are a few tips on how to keep your waggy-tailed friends cool in the hot weather:

  • Make sure you have a fresh, cool bowl of water down in a shady or cool spot (and change the water regularly) – we need access to plenty of water, just like you, especially in this weather
  • Make sure that your dog is able to escape the sun – that they have access to a shady spot or are able to get to the coolest part of the house – my favorite place to lay at the moment is on the cold wood floor in the lounge
  • If you are able to (and if your dog likes water, like me) then get the pool out and get them in (or try a sprinkler) – it’s fun and will help to keep me cool
  • If you’re thinking of taking your pooch out for a walk then do it in the early morning or late evening as these are the coolest times of the day, making it more comfortable for us and for you – if Holly thinks I’m going out when she gets home then she has another thing coming!
  • And on that note, don’t take them for a long walk – whilst it is important that we all get some exercise, too much in this weather can be really bad!
  • Finally, NEVER leave us a parked car alone – it is too hot and we can die in the heat!
That’s it for now, but if anyone has any tips on how to keep your dog cool in the heat, then let us know!
